About CSIR-NEIST
Established in 1961 as the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), the CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) in Jorhat serves as a vital multidisciplinary R&D hub. Its primary mission is to transform India’s vast natural resources—particularly the petroleum, minerals, and medicinal plants of the North Eastern Region—into indigenous industrial technologies. With a diverse portfolio ranging from agrotechnology and petroleum microbiology to geoscience, the institute has generated over 100 technologies, nearly 40% of which have achieved commercial success. Today, these innovations support a wide array of national industries, contributing an estimated Rs. 110 crores to the annual economy.
