About Gauhati High Court
The Gauhati High Court is a premier judicial institution in Northeast India, established on April 5, 1948, following the Government of India Act 1935. Originally inaugurated as the High Court of Assam by the then Chief Justice of India, H.J. Kania, it was later renamed in 1971 under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act. It holds a unique position in the Indian judiciary for having the largest jurisdiction in terms of the number of states, currently serving Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.

1. Age Limit
Candidates must fulfill the following age criteria as of the last date of online application submission:
- Unreserved (UR): Maximum 40 years.
- OBC/MOBC: Maximum 43 years.
- SC/ST(P)/ST(H): Maximum 45 years.
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): Age relaxation is applicable as per rules.
2. Educational Qualification
- Degree Requirements: Candidates must be a Graduate, Post Graduate, or Doctorate in Law from a recognized Indian University.
- Preferred Experience: Preference will be given to candidates practicing at the Bar, those with professional experience, or those with published literary works in Law.
- Deadline: All qualifications must be possessed by the last date of application submission.
3. Selection Process
The selection is divided into two stages:
Stage-I: Written Examination (120 Marks)
- Format: Objective type multiple-choice questions (MCQs) on OMR sheets with a duration of 2 hours.
- Syllabus:
- English: 30 marks.
- Law Knowledge: 50 marks.
- Assamese Language: 20 marks (Qualifying segment; must secure at least 40% or 8/20 marks to qualify).
- General Knowledge: 10 marks.
- General Aptitude: 10 marks.
- Note: Marks obtained in the Assamese segment are not counted toward the final merit list.
Stage-II: Interview/Viva-Voce (30 Marks)
- Eligibility: Candidates are called in a 1:3 ratio based on their merit in the written exam.
- Qualifying Mark: A candidate must secure at least 60% (18 out of 30 marks) in the interview to be considered.
4. Application Fee
- UR/OBC/MOBC: Rs. 500/-.
- SC/ST (P)/ ST (H): Rs. 250/-.
- PwBD: No fee required.
